Mt. Oyama has been revered as a sacred mountain and a place of worship for centuries. At the summit stands the head shrine of Oyama-Afuri Shrine, one of the most important centers of mountain worship in the region.
During the Edo period, Mt. Oyama became one of Japan’s most popular pilgrimage destinations. It is said that as many as one in five people living in Edo, today’s Tokyo, visited Mt. Oyama during their lifetime.
The name “Afuri” is associated with the mountain’s abundant rain and clouds. Farmers from the surrounding areas came here to pray for rain and a good harvest.
As we trek up this historic mountain, we will discover the fascinating story of Japanese mountain worship and the deep connection between nature, people, and faith.
